Lecture: Junior Bonner – The Making of a Classic

Screenwriter Jeb Rosebrook’s screenplay Junior Bonner was filmed on location in Prescott and Yavapai County in the summer of 1971. Directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring Steve McQueen, Junior Bonner was released in 1972 and has become a cult-classic. Recently the film was named by Cowboy and Indians magazine as one of the top 100 Western films. Explore what inspired Jeb Rosebrook to write the script, the legacy of filming it in Prescott, and why it should be considered one of the most important Westerns made in Arizona.
Stuart Rosebrook, Ph.D. is a professional public historian and author. He is currently editor of True West magazine and has a long career in media, journalism, and non-profits. He is an active member of the local Western heritage community and lives in Prescott with his wife Julie and two children.
